Bromsgrove Swimming Club Celebrates Success at the Staffordshire Masters Meet
28th April 2022
On Saturday 23rd April 2022, some of Bromsgrove Swimming Club’s Masters swimmers - Dan, Abi and Talia went to Staffordshire Masters & 15/17, 18/24 Senior Open Meet 2022, accompanied by Masters’ coach Edd Mansell. The masters age groups are every 5 years, and the BSC squad haven’t raced in years…. But off they went and made some incredible achievements at their first competition back in the sport!
First up was Dan, swimming 2 events. Unfortunately, his hat fell off from the start of the 50m Butterfly, but he still hit a personal best time and came 4th in his age group. This strong race set him up nicely for his next event, the 50m Breaststroke. This was a brilliant race and Dan left everything in the pool, again coming 4th in his age group.
Next up was Talia, also swimming 2 events. First the 50m breaststroke - a great race and she achieved a PB since her return to swimming in autumn 2021, only half a second off her all time PB. She came 4th in her age group and after this race was perfectly prepared for her next event, the 50m Freestyle. A gutsy swim from Talia saw her beat her all time PB, going under 29 seconds and winning gold in her age group as well as coming second fastest overall.
Finally, Abi swam 3 events. First up the 50m Butterfly, Abi gave it her all straight off the blocks and hit an all-time PB, winning bronze in her age group. This gave her some much needed confidence for her next race, the 100m Backstroke. Coach Edd Mansell said, “It’s not very often I’m short of words, but I was left speechless by Abi’s incredible performance which was strong from start to finish.” She achieved a huge all time PB, winning silver in her age group and 3rd overall fastest at the meet. After these two phenomenal swims, Abi raced in the 100m Individual Medley, achieving another all-time PB and winning silver in her age group.
After the global Covid-19 pandemic and these 3 swimmers returning to the sport, the hard work, positive attitude and determination they have shown is an inspiration to our younger members. Coach Edd reported “I am so happy for all 3 of them with the results they have worked so hard for. For me, it was a pleasure attending the meet to support them, showing how competitive swimming can be great fun at any age! We all had a fantastic day and the 100% PB rate from when these members returned to the sport is a brilliant achievement!”
